Prompt #1:
In his Pritzker Prize acceptance speech, Barragán stated, "It is alarming that publications devoted to architecture have banished from their pages the words Beauty, Inspiration, Magic, Spellbound, Enchantment, as well as the concepts of Serenity, Silence, Intimacy and Amazement. All these have nestled in my soul, and though I am fully aware that I have not done them complete justice in my work, they have never ceased to be my guiding lights" (Barragán 1980, 1). There is a poetic even illusive quality to these terms that he seeks to bring into his architecture and landscape work.
- Should these words be banished from architectural publications? If so why and if not, why not?
- Select three of these terms and analyze his definition of these terms and how he integrates them into his work. Refer to and cite specific passages as you engage in a discussion.
- Explore how Barragán integrates emotion and sensibility into his architectural creations, referencing his statement and providing examples from his work to illustrate your analysis.
- What are your guiding lights or central values that guide your design approach?

Prompt #2:
Barragan highlighted the importance of cultural context writing, "The lessons to be learned from the unassuming architecture of the village and provincial towns of my country have been a permanent source of inspiration. Such, for instance, the whitewashed walls; the peace to be found in patios and orchards; the colorful streets; the humble majesty of the village squares surrounded by shady open corridors. And as there is a deep historical link between these teachings and those of the North African and Moroccan Villages, they too have enriched my perception of beauty in architectural simplicity" (Barragán 1980, 2). As he reflects on his life experience, he probes the role that culture informs his design practice.
- How does Barragán's Mexican heritage influence his architectural style and design principles? Refer to and cite specific passages as you engage in a discussion.
- Explore how Barragán's cultural identity informs his use of materials, forms, and spatial organization, citing specific instances from his speech and architectural work to support your arguments.
- Is architecture always autobiographical in some way? Should it be?

Prompt #3:
Barragan emphasized the important of Beauty through all his work. He explains that there is a mysterious aspect to it making it difficult to capture in words but that it plays an important role in making human life worthwhile. "Beauty speaks like an oracle, and ever since man has heeded its message in an infinite number of ways: it may be in the use of tattoos, in the choice of a seashell necklace by which the bride enhances the promise of her surrender, or, again, in the apparently superfluous ornamentation of everyday tools and domestic utensils . . . Human life deprived of beauty is not worthy of being called so" (Barragán 1980, 1). Through the course we have seen how perceptions of beauty have differed between movements and eras.
- Examine closely both the work and words of Barragán, what are some of the elements he uses to bring forth beauty? Provide examples and analyze their implication for the users of the space. Refer to and cite specific passages as you engage in a discussion.
- If Luis Barragan were to have lunch with Adolf Loos or Eileen Gray, when discussing beauty where would their positions align and where would they diverge?
- If you were to meet with Luis Barragán, what would you want to learn more about in his work or approach?
