Note: Utilitarian Mind-Set (Brooks's article, page 2, paragraph 6): Utilitarianism is an ethical philosophy. It states that the happiness of the greatest number of people in the society is considered the greatest good. According to this philosophy, an action is morally right if its consequences lead to happiness (the absence of pain); the action is wrong if it ends in unhappiness (pain).
