English 102/Laughtland
Annotated List of Eight Sources
Background/Goals: In this assignment, you'll practice using MLA format for assembling
Works Cited lists, develop a preliminary (tentative) version of the Works Cited list you'll
submit as part of your final research paper, and critically examine the quality, usefulness,
and relevance of your sources. Your final paper won't require the annotations that are
involved as part of this assignment; the main idea of this assignment is to get you to find
and evaluate several sources that you will be able to use as you write your paper.
Reading: In The Curious Researcher, Chapter 2 will be helpful to you for ideas on doing
research and deciding if sources are reliable and appropriate for an academic paper,
and Appendix A gives you formatting guidelines for MLA style. For this assignment, you
MUST follow appropriate MLA formatting to earn full credit. See also the MLA guidelines
on Edmonds CC's MLA LibGuide: http://edcc.libguides.com/mla.
Assignment: For this prewriting step, list at least eight sources that you expect to cite in
your final paper. Compose and organize the bibliographic information for the sources as
if you were writing a Works Cited list (use alphabetical order, double-space evenly
throughout, punctuate carefully, etc.).
Your list needs to include formal annotations (or notes) about the sources in addition to
the bibliographic information. Your annotations should consist of 3-4 sentences about
each source to summarize the content of the source and comment on its potential
usefulness to your paper (that is, comment on how the information will relate to your
thesis).
Specs/Assessment: I'll be grading on the careful, correct use of MLA format. You
must follow the specific format for MLA Works Cited lists as explained in our textbook
and the LibGuide. Most importantly, I'll be looking for sources that meet the criteria of
reliable and scholarly sources appropriate for academic writing. Your annotation for
each source should be brief yet specific enough to indicate the relevance of the
source to your thesis. I also expect to see complete sentences, correct grammar and
spelling, and general attention to detail in your writing.
Below is a template to follow along with a sample entry (on a different course theme).
Author's last name, Author's first name. "Title of Article." [or] Title of Book. Publication
information according to MLA guidelines including place and name of publisher,
year of publication (for books), editor(s), page numbers (for anthologies and
journals), name of the database if you retrieved the article online, library where
the database is located, date of access and URL for the database. Follow the
bibliographic information with a sentence or two that summarizes the book or
article, especially the part that is relevant to your essay. End with at least one
sentence that comments on the work's strengths or weaknesses and its general
usefulness to your project.
Trenton, Patricia, and Patrick T. Houlihan. Native Americans: Five Centuries of
Changing Images. New York: Harry N. Abrams, 1990. This work compares 500
years of historical information and artifacts with drawings, paintings, and
photographs depicting Native Americans and their cultures. The historical
information provided is useful for establishing the contexts for variances among
the images and artifacts, but the book provides no examples of art that reveal
how Native Americans have viewed themselves.
Below are more guidelines to consider in choosing strong sources.

Evaluation Criteria for Web Sources
from Susan E. Beck, New Mexico State University Library
Is there an author? Is the page signed?
Is the author qualified? An expert?
Who is the sponsor?
Is the sponsor of the page reputable? How reputable?
Is there a link to information about the author or the sponsor?
If the page includes neither a signature nor indicates a sponsor, is there any
other way to determine its origin?
RATIONALE
--Look for a header or footer showing affiliation.
--Look at the URL. http://www.fbi.gov
--Look at the domain. .edu, .com, .ac.uk, .org, .net
1. Anyone can publish anything on the web.
2. It is often hard to determine a web page's authorship.
3. Even if a page is signed, qualifications are not usually provided.
4. Sponsorship is not always indicated.
II. ACCURACY
Is the information reliable and error-free?
Is there an editor or someone who verifies/checks the information?
RATIONALE
1. See number 1 above.
2. Web resources rarely have editors or fact-checkers.
3. Currently, no web standards exist to ensure accuracy.
III. OBJECTIVITY
Does the information show a minimum of bias?
Is the page designed to sway opinion?
Is there any advertising on the page?
RATIONALE
1. Frequently the goals of the sponsors/authors are not clearly stated.
2. Often the Web serves as a virtual soapbox.
IV. CURRENCY
Is the page dated?
If so, when was the last update?
How current are the links? Have some expired or moved?
RATIONALE
1. Publication or revision dates are not always provided.
2. If a date is provided, it may have various meanings. For example,
--It may indicate when the material was first written
--It may indicate when the material was first placed on the Web
--It may indicate when the material was last revised

2. If a date is provided, it may have various meanings. For example,
V. COVERAGE
--It may indicate when the material was first written
--It may indicate when the material was first placed on the Web
--It may indicate when the material was last revised
What topics are covered?
What does this page offer that is not found elsewhere?
What is its intrinsic value?
How in-depth is the material?
RATIONALE
1. Web coverage often differs from print coverage.
2. Frequently, it's difficult to determine the extent of coverage of a topic from a web
page. The page may or may not include links to other web pages or print references.
3. Sometimes web information is "just for fun", a hoax, someone's personal
expression that may be of interest to no one, or even outright silliness.
