When a charged particle moves in a magnetic field, it usually goes in a circle or spiral. a) Explain why this happens and the conditions under which the particle moves in a circle. b) How strong is the magnetic field required for a proton to move in a circle with a diameter of18 mm, if it is first accelerated above 4.2 kV voltage? The mass and charge of the proton are given on the eguation sheet. c) If we observe the proton in point (b), it turns out that it moves counterclockwise in a horizontal-plane, if we look at it. So is the direction of the magnetic field up or down? Justify and draw apicture.
