It's hard to imagine what it would be like to spend years behind bars for a crime you didn't
commit. This is far more common than one might imagine. In the United States alone, there
have been at least 2,095 exonerations of innocent inmates since 1989. [1] Around the globe,
organizations such as the Innocence Project are working to exonerate those who have been
falsely accused and convicted through DNA testing and criminal justice system reform.
For this activity, you'll create a slide show and present information on one of these cases. Your
presentation should also include at least three justice reform ideas that could be used to
prevent such wrongful convictions from happening in the future.
Step 1: Research and Case Selection
During the research phase, you'll focus on three things:
•
Gathering information and statistics about wrongful convictions in the United States
Selecting a case example of someone who was wrongfully convicted of a crime and
collecting details:

Look for educational sites and reputable organizations as a starting point. You may choose to
take notes while researching and then input the information into your document afterward, or
you may decide to input the information as you find it-it's up to you. Just make sure you have
enough information to create a solid final product.
Step 2: Presentation Creation
Now, it's time to create your presentation. You will need to include the following components:
• A minimum of two slides that include facts/statistics about wrongful convictions in the
United States
• At least three slides highlighting the facts surrounding the case you selected
• Three or more slides focused on wrongful conviction prevention reform strategies (one
strategy per slide)
• Three to four related images/graphics

The number of slides listed above are only a minimum. You are welcome to add your own
elements of creativity to the slideshow with transitions or additional pictures and graphics. As
long as all of the required information is included, any additional flair is completely acceptable
(but not required). The goal is to ensure that someone who views your presentation gains
valuable knowledge about wrongful convictions.
You may use bullet points for the majority of the information if you would like, or you may use
complete sentences/paragraphs.
To complete this activity, please submit your presentation.
