Question

9. (15 extra credit points) Is Von fact or fiction (real or fake news in today's vernacular)and what diode properties affect it? Consider an exponential model for a diode with

no internal resistance and Is = 3 pA. (a) Using a computer, plot the forward I-V characteristic with a maximum current of 1 mA. Based on this plot, estimate a value for Von. (b) Plot the forward I-V characteristic with a maximum current of 1 kA. Based on this plot, estimate a value for Von. Huh; fake news! (c) Now assume that the diode has an internal series resistance of 2 kN. Repeat part (a) being sure to apply voltages from 0 Vto whatever value is necessary to get approximately 1 mA. Once again, estimate Von, this time by extrapolating the straight portion back to zero current and finding the voltage intercept, preferably by using a linear regression (line-fitting) algorithm on the highest voltage data. (d) Repeat part (c) but make the maximum current of 100 mA. (Going to 1 kA with this series resistance makes it too hard to see the intercept.) (e) Write a few sentences saying what you've learned from this problem. (f) (5 of the 15 points) Based on your reasoning in part (e), provide a formula for how to determine Von from the exponential diode model parameters.
