Question

a. (8 marks)

i. Write down a balanced chemical equation for the formation reaction of 1 mole of

methanol, CH3OH(1), from methane CH4(9), and oxygen, O₂(g).

ii. Using your balanced chemical equation from part i, determine the enthalpy change

for the formation of 1 mole of methanol using Reactions 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3 and their

associated enthalpy changes.

Show all your working.

CH4(g) + H₂O(g) = CO(g) + 3H₂(g)

2H₂(g) + CO(g) = CH3OH(1)

2H₂(g) + O₂(g) = 2H₂O(g)

iii. Is the reaction for the formation of methanol exothermic or endothermic? Explain

your answer (one sentence).

(R3.1); A,H= +206.1 kJ mol-¹

(R3.2); AH = -128.2 kJ mol-¹

(R3.3); A,H= -483.6 kJ mol-1
