Question

A cantilever beam has a span of 10ft and is subjected to a uniformly distributed dead load(not including its self-weight) of 1 kip/ft and a live load of 1.5 kip/ft.

In addition, the beam has a concentrated dead load of 40 kips located 7.5 feet from the fixed end. The beam has cross sectional dimensions of 12 in wide by 18 inches deep and concrete weighs 0.15 kip/ft^3. a) What is the moment that this beam should be designed for, in accordance with Chapter 5 of ACI 318-19? b) If the choice of material has not yet been made, and the owner of the structure that this belongs to requests that all beams behave elastically, what would you as a designer tell the owner about the necessary resistance of the material if the beam is not allowed to deflect more than 1 inch? i.e. what property (or properties) must the material have?
