Question

A device is made of two parallel rails of 16 m and 0.2 m apart with its left

end closed and right end open. The device is made of a conducting material

which has resistance of 2.2/m. A perfect conducting bar is perpendicularly

placed across the parallel rails as shown. The bar is at 2m from the left end

at t = 0 and moves to the right at a constant speed of 9 m/s. The space has a

uniform magnetic field of B of 0.8T that is perpendicular to the device.

1. The total resistance R of the closed loop changes with time. Find the time

function R(t).

2. Determine the current I(t), 0 < t < 1s, through the loop. Specify both

the value as a function of time and the direction.
