A house owner has decided to install a complete support system for his old outdoor swimming pool and contracted your company to do the job. Your company manager tasks you to design the complete support system for this client's existing outdoor swimming pool. Your manager has provided the following information for you to get started: a)Pool size : 1.5 m deep, 25 m long and 20 m wide Ladder: Already existing Under water lighting: Already existing Skimmer: Already existing Piping To be planned and layout as shown in Figure 1 with dimensions and materials to be decided by you. That is, piping layout is fixed but your team can decide on the lengths of different segments of the piping and valves as well their sizes and materials. The heating system must be sufficient to raise the water temperature from 20°Cto 30°C in 2 hours. The rate of heat loss from the water to the air at the outdoor conditions is 920 W/m2, and the heating system must be able to maintain the pool at 30°C at those conditions. Heat losses to the ground are small and can be neglected. Your manager requires your team to use a heater which is to be a natural gas furnace whose efficiency is 85%. Your system should include the heater, variable speed pump, filter, chlorine dispenser unit. You are to decide on the capacity and size of these components with justifications and calculations. You need to decide on the flow rate of the water through the pipes and on the chlorine concentration of the pool. )Maintenance aspects should also be considered as well as other aspects that you deem necessary for the efficient, clean, safe, cost-effective operation of the swimming pool.
