A needs assessment must be done before an IT professional recommends a specific OS. Every organization has unique OS needs and requirements. A user might need specific software while others in the same department do not. Managing these requirements can be challenging when maintaining multiple instances of OSes and capabilities. For this week’s discussion, review the three scenarios from the IT professional’s perspective and select one. Scenario 1: You work for a small software company with four departments, including Marketing, Business Operations, Product Development, and Customer Support. Marketing uses iMovie and Keynote to create marketing materials and external presentations. There is no intent to change products since their departmental standards include these titles. Business Operations must use MS Visio to create system diagrams and flowcharts. Business Operations and Product Development need access to project management software such as Jira or Asana. Lastly, Customer Support uses a customer relationship management (CRM) program that was formerly supported by an older version of Windows. Scenario 2: You work for a large organization with 15 departments. A new leadership initiative to centralize systems requires employees to use the same OS and computer brand. Some departments use Windows, and others use macOS. Some desktops in those departments have Linux-based systems. Some departments are still using older OS versions, which negatively impacts productivity. Customer-facing departments will roll out the Salesforce CRM. The leadership team decided to centralize the system infrastructure because of this CRM implementation. Scenario 3: You work for a major publishing company in the United States that has merged with a smaller company in the United Kingdom. The smaller company’s infrastructure has not been upgraded in a long time. One department is still using Windows 8. Another is running the Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, released in 2012. The organization has relied on certain applications to create newsletters and e-books and design print-on-demand products. All of the technological equipment must be audited to reflect the parent company’s system architecture and security model. In your initial post, address the following items: Identify your chosen scenario. Answer the following questions: What OS and version do you recommend implementing? Why? Should more than one OS be implemented? If so, which ones? What software and hardware requirements support your decision? What else helped you make the decision to recommend specific OSes? Provide a strong rationale for your decisions. State any assumptions you made beyond the information in your chosen scenario.
