Question

A rectangular conducting slab is used to measure the magnetic field magnitude4)and determine its direction. In a known magnetic field, generated by an ideal solenoid with 1000 windings per centimeter,

through which a current I,=2.5A is flowing, the maximum voltage measured by the voltmeter shown in the figure is V, =10mV. Next, the slab is placed in a magnetic field whose y- and z-components are to be determined. In this field, when the slab is horizontal (i.e. lying in the x-y-plane), the voltmeter is measuring a voltage V, = -3mV . The slab is then rotated about the x-axis in clockwise direction until it is lying in the x-z-plane. The voltmeter is now measuring V, =-1.2mV .Determine the corresponding magnetic field components. On the way, make sure to show how the voltage detected by the voltmeter comes about.
