Question

A soil profile consists of silty sand with a saturated unit weight of 20 kN/m³and a dry unit weight of 18 kN/m³. There is a uniformly distributed load of60kPa on the ground surface. Assume that the unit weight of water is Yw=10 kN/m³. (a) Determine the vertical total stress, pore pressure, and vertical effective stress at depths of 0m, 1m, 2m and 6m below the ground surface. The water table is 2m below ground surface. Assume that there is no capillary rise above the water table. (b) Determine again the vertical total stress, pore pressure, and vertical effective stress at depths of 0m, 1m, 2m and 6m below the ground surface. The water table is still 2m below ground surface but this time you should assume that there is a 1m of capillary rise above the water table. (c) What is the effect of the capillary rise on the vertical total and effective stress below the water table? Explain this effect (i.e. the cause of any differences in the values).
