Question

(a) What is the difference between control volume analysis and control system (or control mass) analysis? Why is it preferred to use Control Volume analysis for fluid flows? (b) For the integral form of conservation laws, when do we need to set up actual integrations?Under what conditions is the time derivative term negligible? (c) Write down an expression for flux of mass through an inlet surface of a rectangular cross-section duct, where the fluid velocity vector is V = uî+vĵ+wk, the density of the fluid(p) is a constant, and the duct cross-sectional area is A. Assume that the inlet area outward normal vector of the duct is în = î + 2ĵ – k. What is the magnitude of the mass flux if p = 1000 kg/m³, A = 1 m², and u = 1, v = 0, w = 3 m/s. (d) Write expressions for the components of momentum fluxes through the inlet surface based on the velocity and area normal vectors above. Then calculate the magnitudes and directions of momentum fluxes in î, ĵ, and k directions, respectively.
