A2. Use Table 1 to calculate your answers. (Hint: remember you can use the 'Ctrl' key

to select non-contiguous data - see p.4. of the Introduction to Excel document).

e) Using the figures in Table 1, calculate the percentage growth of each region

from 1801 to 1851. Use these figures to create a line chart showing population

growth in Scotland 1801-1851. Make sure that you include a title and label the

axis. Copy and paste the chart below. (5 marks)

f) Create similar charts for Argyll, Dumfries, Inverness, Linlithgow and Stirling

and compare the trends of population growth in each place. You can resize the

charts and move them around in the spreadsheet. Placing the charts next to each

other within the area outlined in purple in the spreadsheet will make the comparison

easier.

g) Which county's chart most closely resembles the chart for Scotland?

Insert the chart below.

What do these charts tell us about:

• varying patterns of population change in Scotland in the first half of

nineteenth century?

• the likely impact of migration on the rapid increase in population in

certain counties?
