Question
Aaron, Darren and Karen look at Sharon incredulously. They explain to her that they don't have a
copy of the test that they will be distributing to prospective students. It's merely that their incredible
memories are recalling what types of questions are on the test. Even though their recall is
impressive, there is no way that they can recall all the specific right and wrong answers for each
question on these exams. They further inform Sharon that she shouldn't be so naive. What they are
proposing to do based on their recent taking of the CIH exam is what all the other consultants do in
order to plan and update their CIH preparation courses. They have people from their organizations
take the CIH examination to access the latest and greatest questions on these exams as well as
discerning any new topic emphasis. These companies then alter their training courses to be current
and relevant to what is being covered on these tests.
Sharon now believes that she may be over-interpreting the ABIH code of ethics clause and that
what the team is proposing may just be crafty and opportunistic, rather than unethical. What
should Sharon do?/nScenario 3 - A Testy Situation:
Four industrial hygienists pass the CIH examination and, thinking that they're brilliant, decide to
parlay their testing prowess into a training business.
Case Summary
Aaron, Darren, Karen, and Sharon are young, entrepreneurial industrial hygienists. They all own and
work for the same small ten-person consulting company that provides industrial hygiene services,
including training, to a variety of clients. After a few years of work experience, they decide to take
the examination for becoming certified industrial hygienists (CIHS) at the same time. These
credentials are important for them to possess to demonstrate their industrial hygiene credibility
and to attain new business for their company. They are all deemed to be qualified to sit for the
examination. Each passes the examination with flying colors. In fact, they are amazed at their high
scores.
Over a dinner that night to celebrate their joint success, Aaron suggests that they expand their
consulting business to train industrial hygienists on how to pass the CIH exam. Obviously, they
know the material very well, they are all experienced trainers, and apparently, they are extremely
good test takers.
So, they start trying to remember all the specific questions on the exam. They're astonished at how
many questions they can remember among the four of them. They begin to compartmentalize the
questions into the exam's rubric subject matter areas: air sampling and instrumentation; analytical
chemistry; basic science; biohazards; biostatistics and epidemiology; community exposure;
engineering controls/ventilation; ergonomics; health risk analysis and hazard communication; IH
program management; ionizing and non-ionizing radiation; thermal stressors; noise; non-
engineering controls; toxicology, and work environments and industrial processes. After around 4
hours of brainstorming (and a few rounds of drinks), Aaron, Darren, Karen and Sharon are pretty
sure that they have captured around 90% of the questions that were included on the test.
The team quickly starts to outline a 3-day workshop that they could offer to train industrial
hygienists as to the subject material that was specifically represented on their recent CIH test. They
all appear to be quite excited about this future endeavor, except Sharon.
Dilemma
Sharon is unsure if this new business line is ethical especially how it is being developed. She has a
photographic memory and recalls that the ABIH Industrial Codes of Ethics includes the following
clause:
The certificant maintains the security of ABIH examination information and materials, including the
prevention of unauthorized disclosures of test information.
She mentions her concern to Aaron, Darren and Karen. She believes what they are planning to do
would be in violation of their newly minted CIHS and its code of ethics. She is unsure whether she
wants to participate in this activity because of its unethical nature.
