Question

Abstract

We used the EES software to analyze the design of a heat engine based on a simple ideal Bryton

cycle in this project. we choose that the Air with a pressure ratio of rp=17 enters the

compressor and turbine at 310 K and 1100 K. Therefore, the air temperature at the compressor

outlet, the return ratio, and the thermal efficiency are needed. We used the EES software to

solve this problem for six different turbine inlet temperatures: 850K,950K,1050K, 1100K, 1150K,

and 1200K. Since relative pressure calculations are not supported by the EES software, we

suggested to utilize the constant specific heat technique (cold air assumption) in our EES

calculation. We found the difference in it to the manual calculations for variable specific heat

with temperature, we determined the percentage difference between two. Then, we did the

graph the thermal efficiency, back ratio pressure, and air temperature at the compressor outlet,

turbine outlet.

Based on our assumption, the cycle occurs in a steady state, air is an ideal gas, and kinetic and

potential energy changes are insignificant. The study came to the conclusion that the efficiency

of the cycle rises as the pressure ratio does, but this does not suggest that more work is

generated because the compressor uses part of the net work. It was discovered that the

compressor requires more effort and has a greater back ratio the lower the turbine inlet

temperature such as 950 k that we chose this number and after we calculated. Thus, the higher

the temperature, the net work will get also high.

We found study or research that the Compressor and turbine parts made of the typical material

won't be able to sustain high temperatures and pressures for very long before they crack or

explode.
