By the end of this course, the student will be able to:
· Appropriately incorporate academic vocabulary into writing.
· Write cohesive, readable academic essays.
· Produce and self-correct academic writing to a high level of accuracy as it relates to spelling, mechanics, and grammar.
Directions: Write a well-developed academic essay (21/2- 3 pgs., 500 words minimum) that responds to one of the following two questions related to Unit 3:
A. Many of the world's largest companies, such as Toyota, Gap, Nike, and Samsung, etc., offshore their manufacturing and/or assembly processes. Select one of these or another large company of your choice not discussed in Reading 2. Research the answers to these questions: 1. What is the history of the company? 2. Where are the company's products or product components made and/ or assembled made? Why did the company choose to manufacture/ assemble its products there? 3. Has the company experienced any negative reactions to outsourcing? 4. What are its recent labor trends related to the pandemic, economy, globalization, supply chain, environment, etc ---- is it expanding outsourcing, doing more insourcing, using crowdsourcing?
Then, write a Case Study on the company you researched. It must include the following:
Paragraph 1: Introduction and thesis statement
Paragraph 2: A brief history and background of the company
Paragraph 3: Present the findings from your research above: where the company's products are manufactured/assembled and why
Paragraph 4: Describe the company's experience with outsourcing: what jobs are outsourced off shore or insourced; what problems the company has experienced with outsourcing, and whether outsourcing has been as success or failure (paragraph 4)
Paragraph 5: Conclusion, with predictions about the company's future

The essay must include:
· at least 5 paragraphs
o an introduction, with 2-4 general-to-specific sentences ending in a thesis statement that indicates the content and organization of the essay and makes a clear claim
· 3 well-developed body paragraphs
o a conclusion paragraph
· 2 paraphrases (quotations are optional): at least one paraphrased source with an APA in-text citation from one of the readings in Making Connections 4, Unit 3, that supports a point in your essay and at least one paraphrased outside source related to your topic
· at least two APA reference citations under the title "List of References" at the end of the essay.
You will be graded on the following description and the rubric here:
Task Completion
· The essay must have 5 paragraphs
· The introduction is effective and has a clear thesis statement
· All paragraphs have topic sentences that are related to the thesis
· Each paragraph is well-developed and contains examples, facts, logical reasoning, or paraphrased information
· Three body paragraphs that respond to the questions above
· At least one paraphrased passage from Unit 3 in the textbook and one outside source that are properly placed, introduced, attributed and cited in APA format
· Conclusion summarizes the essay and makes predictions about the company's future
· List of References contains the name of author, publication date, title, place, and publisher for our textbook and the other source in APA format
· Essay is authentic and avoids plagiarism (portions are not copied from the text or a source)
Cohesion and Organization
· The essay is easy to read
· Connection of ideas is clear
· Transitions to new paragraphs are logical and smooth
· Sentences in the paragraph follow a logical order
· A variety of transition words/phrases are used correctly (not just First, Second, Third, etc.)
Mechanics
· No errors with sentence boundaries (No Fragments, Comma Splices or Run-on Sentences)
· Correct punctuation (periods, commas, semi-colons, quotation marks)
· Correct spelling and capitalization
Vocabulary
