The Amount of Money a Person has is not a Meaningful Measure of Success If one has to ask someone, what is the definition of success? Most people will probably say making a lot of money. But great people who reach the pinnacle of making wealth, offer something different. They, indeed, made a lot of money but they measure their success not only on the criteria of amount of money. The words Steve Jobs said in the last stage of his life are worth remembering. He said, "Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful... that's what matters to me" (Goodreads 2022). For him, doing something wonderful doesn't equate to making money but to derive satisfaction from what he has invented. This counts success not the money only. But in the globalized world in which we live, money is often the primary and only criterion for success in life for most individuals. People are following the money alone in a herd. Money can buy you power and reputation. The ability to buy time. Money can occasionally even win you a life. Therefore, having money has become everyone's top priority. And it is wrong as money has power indeed to get us the perks of life. But in today's capitalist world and in the era of globalisation, making immense money has its cost on important aspects of people's lives. Working around twenty hours, people are running short of time. This has severe consequences on the health and well being of people. They lack quality time with their family, don't get enough time to relax. Though money is important for a person. But there is another factor that can be used to gauge one's level of achievement in life. The occupations and satisfaction we derive from pursuing them are a significant factor in defining success in our lives. For instance, if one is an athlete, there are several ways to evaluate our success, including winning competitions, setting records, competing in the league. So, the meaning of success is not objective but the subjective. Even Osama Bin Laden had a lot of wealth, he was the heir to a Saudi billionaire who controlled a wealth of approx. $300 million (Forbes, 2001). But can you categorize him as successful? Perhaps not. His success can be called negative, but not positive and desirable at all. The founder of Al Qaeda and mastermind of the 9/11 attacks which caused the death of thousands of innocent people can't be cited as successful (FBI, 2022). Although success is the greatest of endeavours one wants to achieve, only the amount of money equated to success presents a very narrow definition of success. Rather, pursuing a healthy and happy life requires your loved ones around, healthy physical and mental health, some quality to relax and go around beautiful places. Nelson Mandela very aptly said about success, equating it to free will, he said, "Money won't buy success. The freedom to make it will”( The Medium). Here he goes to the deeper meaning of success. He thought that freedom to make money would create success, but still it can never buy. In reality, if one is fortunate enough to be accompanied by so many supportive individuals who value and love them through good and difficult times, and if one is fortunate enough to be able to do what they love for a livelihood while also assisting as many people as possible in leading happier, healthier lives, then they are truly blessed.
