Assignment Details Unit 4 - Discussion Board (60 points) Close Due: Tue, May 21 | Printer Friendly Version Description In your own words, answer this unit's discussion questions in a main post (minimum 200 words), and respond to at least two peers' postings (minimum 75 words each). Assignment Details Think about a family artifact that is dear to you. It can be a piece of art, clothing, jewelry, music, an old letter, or a photograph. It can be anything you think represents your culture and tells your story. Known in cultural studies as cultural artifacts, these are usually items that are culturally, socially, or ethnically important. View this video on cultural artifacts, and then address the following questions in the context of a cultural artifact in your family: 1. Describe your family's cultural artifact. 2. Tell the story of your chosen artifact. For example, you can discuss the following: • What role does the cultural artifact play in your family history or your cultural background? • What meaning might it have throughout history-past, present, and future? In what ways does the artifact connect to a "set of values" or beliefs? 3. If you found out the artifact was worth a lot of money, would you consider selling it? Why or why not? 4. How might the artifact you choose to document tell a bigger story about our common humanity? 5. In responding to your peers in the Discussion Board (DB), you can compare the artifacts discussed with your peers. You can also discuss why the artifacts being discussed would be similar or different across different families or cultures.
