Assignment Information 3/23/24, 8:48 AM GRA 330 Module Four Activity Guidelines and Rubric Overview Now that you know what makes a good data visualization and data story, you can create your own data story. In addition to selecting suitable chart or graph types based on the data needs, you should also pay attention to the design of the visualization and how you present the story itself. In this activity, you will create a data story using three visualizations and apply your graphic design skills to make the story effective and engaging. This will also help you prepare for the project submission in Module Seven. Scenario You are a freelance graphic designer who has been hired by the Donut Bytes corporate office for designing some of their presentations and annual reports. The office is currently reviewing sales data for one of their franchise locations. This includes the number of different products sold each month during the second half of the previous year. They are looking to uncover certain patterns in their sales to be able to plan for this year. They'd like you to create a data story that will show their managers the key findings from this sales data set and help them plan for the coming year. The data set is linked in the Supporting Materials section below. Choose three of the following findings to represent in your data story: Top 5 most popular flavors (for all months shown) 5 least popular flavors (for all months shown) Most popular months for sales overall • Least popular months for sales Time of year when there is a spike in the sale of certain flavors You will need to create three separate data visualizations to represent a data story using three of the options listed above. You may need to use functions such as SUM and AVG in the Excel data set first to determine the three key findings you will include in your visualizations. Directions Create a data story with three data visualizations that show three key findings from the data set provided in the Supporting Materials section below. Review the Design Brief linked in the Supporting Materials section for page and other design specifications. Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria: 1. Write a brief introduction that explains the purpose of the story expressed in the data. A. Use a new Adobe Illustrator file with specifications according to the Design Brief. B. Include a heading for the data story. C. Include the brand logo from the Design Brief document. 2. Create three data visualizations that represent the story. A. Remember to apply SUM functions, AVG functions, or both as needed in the Excel data set. B. Import the data and results from your Excel data set into Adobe Illustrator. C. Create three different graph or chart types to represent your chosen findings. D. Choose specifications, such as size, scale, and labels, for each graph or chart. 3. Apply the elements and principles of design to the visualizations to enhance effectiveness and visual appeal. Include the following: A. At least one primary color or primary brand color (selected from the colors shown in the Brand Logo within the Design Brief) B. Varying shades, transparency, or levels of opacity of your selected colors for the visualizations C. Balance D. Proportion E. Emphasis F. Space 4. Explain the data story by providing a brief explanation of your findings for each visualization. A. Include a title for each visualization. https://learn.snhu.edu/content/enforced/1545008-GRA-330-X4745-OL...ity%20Guidelines%20and%20Rubric.html?ou=1545008&d21_body_type=3 Page 1 of 3 Assignment Information 5. Apply typography to the data story. A. Choose complementary font styles, sizes, and colors for different parts of the story. B. Apply these to your headline, introduction, and explanations for each visualization. 6. Apply visual hierarchy principles to the data story. Consider the following for all sections of the story: A. Positioning B. Size C. Alignment 3/23/24, 8:48 AM Note: A best practice for including text in Illustrator is to first create the text in Microsoft Word so you can check for grammar and spelling errors. Once finalized, the text can be copied and pasted into the Illustrator file. What to Submit Export your Adobe Illustrator file as a PDF and submit your data story as a 1-page PDF document. Sources, if any, should be cited according to MLA style.
