Question

Audience.

Your target audience is members of the Council. You should assume that they have varying levels of comfort with mathematics; while they all

took math in high school, some have not encountered math for a long time.

Step 1. Create a model for your hometown population based on the features that impact it that you identified in ACT A. Use the step-by-step

procedure from the SIAM textbook. Your model should look like a function with some unknown parameters.

Step 2. Find population data for your hometown that spans a period of time of at least 20 years and includes 2022.

Step 3. Use some (not all) of your population data to fit your model from step 1. Explain how you fitted it. Your model should now look like a

function with no unknown parameters.

Step 4. Use the remaining population data to check whether your model is good for past population.

Step 5. Make population projections for your hometown based upon the mathematical model that you created for population over time.

Step 6. Explain to the members of the City Council the accuracy of your projections.

Report requirements.

Your report needs to satisfy all the following requirements, otherwise it will not be graded.

Typed (not handwritten) with a maximum of 500 words

Includes a mathematical model for the population of your hometown with an explanation on how it was developed

Includes the projections required with a discussion on their validity

Cite your sources. Any citation style is appropriate but you must be consistent throughout - Don't forget to cite the SIAM textbook and

where you obtained your data
