CE 431 - Environmental Engineering I WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT PROCESS INVESTIGATION PAPER Investigate or tour your local wastewater treatment plant and submit a short paper describing the treatment plant. • • • Get a tour of the plant. If you cannot get a tour, investigate the treatment process online. Look online for treatment plant information that provides the following information: ○ ○ Wastewater design flows; Wastewater quality (including BOD, SS and ammonia); and Treatment process steps (schematic diagram). Ask operator/tour guide about special problems encountered when treating local wastewater. Ask operator/guide what changes would they recommend to improve the treatment process. Ask how sludge is managed. If you did not find one online, request a schematic diagram showing treatment process steps. If you are unable to get a paper or electronic copy, just make note of the treatment steps and draw your own simple process diagram. Write a short (1-2 page) paper that includes the location of the plant you visited, raw water quantity and quality, process information including the type(s) of biological treatment, and how the solids (sludge) are managed. Include links to any descriptive literature (use footnotes or endnotes) in your paper. Raw water quality and treated water quality (BOD, suspended solids and ammonia) will be required for full credit. This assignment is worth a total of 50 points, with points earned by the following activities: • Go on tour or investigate the process online (10 points) Document treatment process. Specifically address the following: Design flows (5 points) Raw wastewater quality (5 points) ○ Treated wastewater quality (5 points) ○ Sludge management (5 points) • Provide or draw your own schematic describing the treatment process (12 points) Summarize special problems/challenges the plant has, and any desired changes in the WWTP process (8 points) As with all assignments in this course, this should be an individual effort. Any evidence of collaboration or other forms of academic dishonesty will earn a score of 0 on the assignment and a report filed with the CE department head, CEM Dean, and Dean of Students./n NEED TO- Change or Fix whatever is necessary in the REPORT to fulfill the assignment requirements. For the Raw Water Source and Quality, I need numerical values/data for everything. For Chemicals Used in Treatment Processes, double-check and correct what was highlighted. For Challenges Faced, the challenges need to be personal challenges that they face (see rubric), not generalized challenges. Summarize special problems/challenges the plant has, and any desired changes in the WWTP process (see rubric) Might have to call and ask them about their specific issues/numerical data values.
