Question

CE381P - Final project (Milestone 1/3: report submission)

Project info. The final project involves a final report (< 2 page/per team member + supplementary

figures + code). You need a team of 1-3 members. With your team, discuss potential project ideas

related to either, but not limited to the following:

material or geometric nonlinearities in structures,

truss/frame metamaterials or negative Poisson's ratio structures,

• truss/dome/steel bridge design and optimization,

• buckling or wrinkling analysis of structures,

computational implementations and code development,

iterative and incremental solution techniques,

(Additional ideas: Analysis of Kelvin foam structure with varying angle, analysis of spider webs using

beams/truss elements, wrinkling of soft materials, shape-shifting truss structures due to thermal

loading, etc.)

Your project can involve i) using Mastan2 (or any other structural analysis program) for the

analysis/design, ii) writing a MATLAB (or any other programing language) code for structural

analysis or its parts for demonstration of class content, iii) presenting more advance extension of a

topic covered in the lectures (in a lecture notes format if preferred), and iv) review of a journal

article relevant to the topics discussed in the lectures. Consult with the instructor in case you

need more suggestions for a suitable project topic. You should select a project topic that you want

to explore more. For those of you who are involved with research at UT or in industry, I also

recommend picking a topic relevant or supplementary to your research.

Deliverables for Milestone A. The deadline to submit your report: Monday, Oct 30rd.

• Project title

Team members (or indicate if you or your team needs a new team member. Individual projects

are also ok.) Crowded teams are expected to write a longer report.

3-5 line summary of what the project will be. This summary should be written individually by

each team member. Team members can focus on different aspects of the same chosen topic.

Choose a project that you can finish in approximately a 2-3 week period of time. If you are looking

for additional group members, please indicate this in the report. Based on the relevancy of the

proposed projects, I will combine groups/individuals to form a team. Toward the end of the semester,

you will be asked to act as grader of another project for which you will have to read and understand

the report and ask questions. This means your report should be ready and shared with your discussor

several days before the last day of classes. The grading will be based on how well you understand

the topic of your final project and how well you communicate your new knowledge to others through

the report. This will be evaluated by the content of your report as well as by your answers to the

questions of your grader. Report/grader pairings will be posted later in the semester. The instructor

will offer extra office hours for project progress & discussions. Feel free to contact the instructor to

make an appointment.
