Chapter 5 Paper: Movie Critique Number of Points: 40 Number of Pages: 3 In this paper, you will be writing a critique of a movie about a racial-ethnic group (preferably different from yours) using sociological concepts and perspectives. Make sure the movie is related to at least one of the racial-ethnic groups discussed in Chapter 5. Following are some points you should keep in mind while watching the movie and writing the critique. Here is the layout of the paper: 1. Description: A movie critique is not just a review or summary of the plot, it goes deeper into reflecting and analyzing it. 2. Introduction: Title of the movie. Also, describe the movie's main subject or theme. 3. Body: Jot down the summary of the movie identifying the main characters, describing the setting, and the plot. Meaning, give a brief synopsis/ summary of the movie plot. I do not want you to write, "I liked it because it was a good movie," or "I hate it because it was a boring movie." You should provide a critical assessment of the success/failure or effectiveness/ineffectiveness of the movie. 4. Analysis Through the Sociological Lens: In this section, you analyze the movie. Write about your own opinions; just be sure that you explain and support them with examples from the text. Here are some questions you might consider • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the movie? • Identify sociological themes/concepts in the movie. In what ways the movie reflects the events and social reality of its time and in what ways it distorts them? • Does the movie depict universal human concerns, social problems, and oppressions ideologies? • You should highlight the sociological symbolism in the film (don't worry about being right or wrong). In other words, relate the movie with the concepts leamed in the class thus far. • What is your overall response to the movie? Did you find it interesting, moving, or boring? Why? Would you recommend it to others? Why or why not? Conclusion: Review and your thoughts together. 6. Finally: please follow the instructions; think out of the box; think critically, and enjoy the assignment!
