CE#26-MOTION STUDIES:
SUMMARY:
Motion Studies are used to create animations in SolidWorks. They use a timeline-based interface
to animate motion, cameras, lights, appearances, suppressions, and other elements of an
assembly. Motion studies do not change assembly properties but their motions are limited to
them i.e. what can be moved in an assembly is what can be animated. There are 3 types of
motion modes: animation, basic motion, and motion analysis. Animation mode provides basic
motion using keyframes and motors. Basic motion mode provides more realistic simulations
using springs, advanced mates, and gravity. Motion analysis mode is part of the SW Motion add-
in that uses kinematic solvers that account for material properties such as mass/inertia to simulate
advanced motion based on forces, springs, dampers, and friction. This exercise will cover the
animation mode only.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Use motion studies to create an animation of the tricone drill that is shown in ce#26-end.wmv.

Page 1/10 1. Open the start file:
1.1. Open the ce#26 start.sldasm file.
1.2. Look for a tricone drill appear in the graphics area..
2. Activate the [FREE FOR ALL] configuration:
note: The default model is restrained to a [TEMP ALIGN RIGHT] and [TEMP ALIGN FRONT]
mate. The [FREE FOR ALL] configuration will suppress those mates so the model can rotate and
translate as needed for the animation. Remember that an assembly can only be animated where
the assembly moves freely.
2.1. Go to the configurations tab and double click [FREE FOR ALL]. Make sure not to move
the assembly parts around after this step is done since the alignment will be lost.

3. Create an explosion view:
3.1. Go to Insert > Exploded View, or search it from the command box.
3.2. Sequence the exploded parts as if they were disassembled in real life. See the chart
below for translate/rotate values and explode as shown.

3.3. Make sure not to edit the explosion in the model after a motion study is created because
this can damage the animation and it is often irreversable.
3.4. See ce#11-assembly drawings if assistance is needed with explosion views.
4. Setup a motion study:
4.1. Select the Motion Study button on the lower tabs.
Model 3D Views Motion Study 1.
4.2. If changes were made to the assembly, it's best to create a new motion study. To create
a new motion study, right-click the lower tabs, and select [Create New Motion Study].
