As you may remember from the CE 533/CE

534 Mechanics of Materials class, the tensile

strength of steel is measured by pulling the

steel bar as shown below (Fig. 1) and

recording the stress at different loading

stages. As discussed in Lesson 2-Material

Properties. for the concrete, however, the

tensile strength is measured using either a

flexural test (Fig. 2) or a split cylinder test

(Fig. 3). Why the tensile strength of concrete

is not tested similar to that for the steel?
