I remember that I was censored on the famous social media site, Twitter in 2020. It was a tweet from former US President Mr. Donald Trump. Mr. Trump was claiming to "glorifying violence" of people who were protesting because of the death of a Black man in police custody (Collins, 2020). But, he had no answer to the reason for such a brutal death of a minority citizen. Instead of deleting the tweet completely, Twitter had a protective warning on the top of it saying, "This Tweet violated the Twitter rules about glorifying violence. However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public's interest for the Tweet to remain accessible" (Porter, 2020). This is a great attempt by Twitter to hide content that promotes more violence by glorifying it. However, they also kept the tweet accessible for those who were still interested. It is a great middle ground between "censorship" and "free speech". I think that it is a good step to hide sensitive content so that it does not promote violence or hatred. In the name of free speech, powerful people like Mr. Donald Trump cannot do this. Thus, I think that it was an appropriate step. References Collins, K. (2020, May 29).
