during air travel. The federal government has called attention to the fire risks associated

with lithium-ion batteries in devices such as mobile phones, laptops, and e-cigarettes.

The number of incidents employing these kinds of batteries has tripled since 2019,

according to data from the Federal Aviation Administration.

A significant event occurred earlier this week when a United Airlines flight to Newark

was forced to return to San Diego after a passenger's battery pack caught fire, resulting

in the hospitalization of four flight attendants

Vapes and e-cigarettes accounted for 35% of all lithium-battery incidents on airplanes in

2022, surpassing battery packs and laptops as the primary perpetrators. According to the

FAA, these batteries can catch fire if they are compromised; in such uncommon cases,

flight personnel will secure the device in a thermal containment bag.
