Issue #1 - Abortion Law in Florida - This is interesting to me because I care about people being able to make
choices about when they have kids, and how our state is changing the legal landscape.
News article: DeSantis signs Florida GOP's 6-week abortion ban into law - and now clarifies exceptions to the
ban This article talks about the recent law the governor signed to restrict abortion to only 6 weeks, how it
changes the law from 15 to 6 weeks, making Florida more similar to neighboring states, and basically making
abortion unavailable.
News article: Florida's ballot in 2024 will include a measure to protect abortion. This article talks about the
ballot initiative that passed, which allows voters in Florida to vote on access to abortion. This makes
reproductive rights part of the political system, which will be exercised in November 2024.
Corresponding chapter- Chapter 17 - Politics, because it looks at whether or not this law is seen as just use of
authority by our elected representatives. It also examines the role of voters and elections in democracy and
law-making.
Examples of topics could be: changing laws about crime, marijuana use and how it is seen, Same sex
marriage, Parental (maternity and paternity) leave, Gender inequality, DEI, Affirmative action, War in
Ukraine, Debate about gun rights, healthcare shortages, Doomscrolling, Divorce, etc. Possibilities are
endless!
