Assessment 4: Self Reflection
As described in the formative coursework 3, in Industry you will perform regular evaluations of your work and your performance within a team, either formally (e.g. a probation or appraisal meeting with your line manager) or informally with your team. The purpose of this coursework is to develop your ability to reflect on your performance in your team.
We asked you to use the Plus/Delta (+/A) methodology, used in industry, where the Plus stands for "This went well, do again", the Delta stands for "This did not go well, change". You were asked to identify one Plus and one Delta for each of your team members as well as for yourself. In your a brief recording you reflected on this peer- and self-assessment. The Plusses and Deltas identified should have addressed attitude and behaviour within the team, not technical contributions to the team. Your ability to address technical content can be considered as a characteristic of your personality.
In the present coursework you are asked to create a diagrammatic representation showing a reflection of your characteristics. You started to think about those at the start of Semester A, when you were encouraged to undertake an analysis of your personality type, see the tab for Semester A, Week 2: Professional Skills and Teamwork, ProfessionalSkills. In addition, you have all been working in a group for a semester and therefore have started to understand more about yourself and teamwork. In coursework 3 you were asked to undertake some peer reflection and to submit a recording discussing one Plus and one Delta. Those of you who submitted a recording will get some feedback on the nature of your reflections, which will support you in the present coursework.
To help you with this reflection, you should look at the following questions, and pick at least 4 to address, which should prompt reflection about yourself as well as your interaction with others:
• What are some honest, unfiltered things about you?
· What annoys?
· What are your quirks?
· What qualities do you particularly value in people who work with you?
. How do you help people do their best work and develop their talents?
. What's the best way to communicate with you?
. What's the best way to convince you of something?
. What are some things that people might misunderstand about you that you should clarify?
· How do you like to give feedback?
· How do you like to get feedback?
We are wanting to see a
1. genuine insight into your individual strengths and weaknesses;
2. genuine understanding of what and how you think you need to change - a bonus would be evidence of such a change since you started the project;
3. an understanding of team dynamics and where they fit in;
4. insight into how you like to be treated as an individual, student, co-worker, using radical candour, humour, data, empathy etc.
What to include
On one A4 page:
· Your name
. For the rest, it is up to you how you are going to display your characteristics. You might want to use a grid type format with bullet points, you might want to make this a user guide to yourself, or you might want to present a reflection of your characteristics very differently. The choice is yours, but we want you to focus your effort on genuine reflection, not necessarily on the presentation. This is a difficult skill to develop that some people find hard, it may be the first time that you have been asked to think of this.
. You can use any means to present this page - Word, PowerPoint, Prezi or hand-drawn if you wish. The diagram must fit, in a readable manner, on one page of A4.
How to submit your page
For information on how to submit, read the guidance on QMplus. The submission deadline is 13th March 2024.
Assessment criteria
The submission is individual, and the mark will be awarded based on the criteria below:
· Content (50%): Reflective thinking evident in considering your performance, qualities and areas for improvement clearly explained, and presented logically.
. Credibility (25%): Insightful and open representation of yourself .
· Presentation (25%): Good visual use of figures / images and appropriate use of words and graphics.
QMplus will show a detailed assessment rubric, closer to the submission deadline. This coursework will contribute 10% to the overall module mark.
You need to participate in a workshop in week 3 (5-9 Feb), in your supervised project time, thinking about the Team's likely success and issues so that your contribution can be considered in this light. This should also help you with developing your submission.
