ENGR 364 course project SFSU Objective Project Title: Structural Analysis of a Bracket with a Hole 1) To better understand the physical concepts introduced in ENGR 364, materials, and manufacturing processes by providing three-dimensional (3D) visualization of bending stresses in a cantilevered beam. 2) To get hands-on experience with existing tools to find solutions to engineering problems related to mechanical design when analytical solutions might be difficult to obtain. 3) To provide opportunities for students to improve oral and written communication skills through teamwork experience, report writing, and presentations. Project description In this project, students will work in a team to design a bracket to hold a personalized coffee mug and learn to use Matlab to perform stress and strain analysis on the bracket. A parametric study will be performed to analyze the performance of various materials for the bracket. Additionally, students will practice choosing the best material for a pre-defined design criteria, by providing analysis and justifications based on the simulation results for stress and deflection analysis. The project is worth 20% of students' overall credit in ENGR 364. Project Tasks 1) Install Matlab R2023b using this link. If you don't have a computer or prefer not to use your own personal computer, you can borrow one from the SFSU library. 2) Using any CAD software of your choice, design a 3D bracket similar to the one provided to you (BracketWithHole.stl) with specified dimensions to hold a personalized coffee mug. Name the new design bracket [group number].stl, e.g. bracket_1.stl. 3) Copy the Matlab file provided to you and the two *.STL files into a subdirectory on your computer. 4) Run the Matlab code using the BracketWithHole.stl file to practice getting some of the following results. Then run the Matlab code on your designed bracket called bracket_[group number].stl and make sure the code works before you continue to do the analysis in the following steps. 5) Carefully do the following steps to collect output figures and information requested and include them in your final report. a. Using hand calculations, identify the critical section in the bracket. Estimate maximum bending stresses in the crucial section. b. Using Table A-5, select 3 to 4 materials with various Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. Run the Matlab code for each material. Create a table; then report the max Von Misses Stress and Max deflection in each direction for different materials along with their E and v. Discuss how these two parameters affect the results. C. Set design criteria based on a maximum deflection for the bracket in one or all three directions when holding a full mug. Based on your analysis in (b), what material will give you the minimum deflection? Discuss your answer. d. Set design criteria based on the minimum weight for the bracket + full mug. SFSU As one of the output parameters, calculate n, the factor of safety using DE theory, i.e., n = Yield Strength /Von Mises Stress. Plot the color map of the factor of safety and discuss why you observe a distribution of n. For your best design, what is the value of n at the critical point (the most vulnerable point in your entire structure)? f. Find out the maximum weight of a full mug the bracket can hold without exceeding a maximum deflection of 0.1 mm. Project Deliverables: 1) Technical report in PDF format; maximum 10 pages (excluding the cover page and references, if any). The report must be submitted by the due date to be considered for full credit. Please proofread before submission. 2) Include the project title, semester, course name and number on the cover page, and the team members' names. 3) Also, briefly mention the role of each team member, at the beginning of at the end of the report. 4) In your report, include a clear schematic of your designed bracket with specified dimensions. Submit the CAD file used for your analysis in *.STL format. 5) Use a combination of tables, graphs, and plots to demonstrate your results. Discuss and analyze the presented results in your report. 6) Proofread the final report; make sure it is well written and clear in details. 7) Submit the final report in PDF format.
