Essay on Brazilian music culture MU 100 Required Paper: Music of Other Cultures Summary Music is present all over our world, and the music of other cultures can be fascinating to compare to what we are familiar with on a daily basis. This project is designed to allow you the opportunity to dig into a culture that you do not consider to be part of your own identity, learn about its musical traditions, and provide detailed observations/analyses of five (5) examples of music from that country/region/culture. Choose a culture that interests you, whether because you've traveled there, like the cuisine, know you like the music, find its history interesting, etc. Here is a Microsoft Word template for you to use as you write your paper! (This link provides a PDF option) Here is an example of a successful paper. (Include the titles of your song in your paragraphs, not as headers like this student did.) All assignments are submitted after being scanned via Turnitin for academic integrity purposes. Any resources you cite must be indicated in a way that makes it very clear where you got outside information. Use this citation guide to help you give credit to your sources. Choose whichever citation style your major field uses. A simple "References" page is not sufficient. Instructions Identify a culture, other than any of your own, that you wish to research. There are a variety of reasons we feel motivated to research a particular area, so go with your instincts. Research a bit about this country's traditional music. Avoid leaning heavily on popular music, as our cultures have experienced a significant amount of cross-pollination with Western popular music. If you'd like to choose a couple popular examples to demonstrate social and/or political movements from that culture, please do so. Using Napster, Spotify, and/or YouTube, find five (5) examples of "traditional" music from that country/region. These can be examples of folk tunes, music for theater/dance/stage performances, ceremonial music, or even more modern examples that use culturally traditional instruments. Carefully annotate each of your listings, using musical terminology from unit 1 to describe each song you chose and what makes characterizes it as an example of that culture (and time period, if appliccable). Assemble your annotated list into paragraphs that form one continuous musical description (complete with hyperlinks to YouTube, Spotify, and/or Napster tracks). Make a list of your songs, linked to where you found them, and make that one final page in your document. Overall: 3 pages of writing, a works cited page, and a page of your songs. This makes 5 pages as a minimum, in total. Formatting Times New Roman, 12-point font 1-inch margins on all four sides Double-spaced Minimum three full pages of writing Remember, this is not a list of songs, but a typed document of prose. *The only accepted file types are doc, docx, or pdf.
