Essay Prompts

Please answer one of the following prompts in your essay. You do not need to answer all of the

questions for that prompt in order (although you may if it works well for your ideas). Instead,

you should use the questions to generate your brainstorming and then organize your ideas

logically. Remember to be specific with your claims and evidence:

1) What is the role of internalized racism in Weird Rules to Follow, and how does it shape

the way Mia is able to imagine her future? Consider the following: What does Mia learn

from non-Indigenous people around her about what it means to be Indigenous in her

community? What does she learn from other Indigenous people, including her family,

about what it means to be Indigenous? How does the ending reflect the ways Mia has

internalized some of these messages throughout the novel?

Essay #2

You will write an essay of approximately 1000 words responding to one of the prompts below

based on Kim Spencer's Weird Rules to Follow and at least one reliable secondary source.

Remember that your essay should have a strong thesis statement which brings all your ideas

together to clearly state your overall argument./nAs discussed in class, your essay should:

Be approximately 1000 words

Contain a clear introduction and conclusion as well as approximately three body

paragraphs

Contain a clear and specific thesis which states the overall argument of the entire essay

Have a clear topic sentence at the beginning of each body paragraph which states the

main idea of that entire paragraph

Provide support for each of these claims

Contain at least three quotations following MLA citation format

Analyze the quotations and evidence provided

Maintain a focus on Weird Rules to Follow while using the secondary source to provide

context

Use transitions to move between ideas

Use correct grammar and spelling

Use formal language by avoiding contractions, first and second person, conversational

language, etc.

Have a Works Cited page following MLA style

Be formatted using MLA style
