Question

Exercise No. 2 (Weighting 35%) - Due 22/3/24 Seismic EC8 and Time History Analysis of a Building An existing 5 storey Reinforced Concrete framed building has been designed as follows: In

the 'North-South' direction, stability is achieved through shear walling and bracing. In the 'East-West' direction, stability is achieved through rigid jointed monolithic moment frame action (Vierendeel). These 'moment' frames are shown in elevation in the East-West direction in Figure 2. The following structural properties apply: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi) (vii) RC sections are used for the columns throughout the entire frame and in a strong axis configuration. Each student has a designated column section dimensions, Breadth 'T' mm and Depth 'L' mm. On the first, second, third and fourth floors, 'H' mm deep x 300mm wide RC beams are used (figure 3), whilst on the roof 350mm deep x 200mm wide beams are used. All concrete slabs have a depth of 175 mm. An additional characteristic dead load of 1 kN/m² is applied in addition to self-weight. The slabs can be assumed to span one way in the 'North- South' direction and act compositely with the beam section in the 'East-West' direction. For the purposes of calculating the section properties the beams can be assumed to mobilize 1m flange width to act as a Tee section (see figure 3) In addition, variable actions of 3 KN/m² acts on the floors and 1.25 KN/m² acts on the roof. The concrete strength is assumed to be C50. The spacing between adjacent frames is D m. The building is founded on a Soil Class given in the parameter list. The damping is assumed to be 5% and the design peak ground acceleration is also provided in the parameter list. A type 1 EC8 Spectra will be assumed./nFE Analysis with Seismic Engineering. You are required to do the following: Produce a suitable structural model (East-West) of the building in 2D using both ANSYS and Linpro. This must be validated and verified through static (gravity only) analyses first (checking mass, reactions etc.). Use full section properties for the concrete assuming it is uncracked (model 1). Note that the load is characteristic, i.e. load factors of 1. Using a suitable representation as a SDOF sway frame, calculate the five natural sway frequencies of the frame. I will provide you with an SMATH sheet to do this (no formula exists in Blevins for this particular arrangement - do not calculate this from first principles, use the Smath sheet!)./nDimensions A (m) 5.5 B (m) 3.25 C (m) 2.5 D (m) LO 5/nColumn & Beam T (mm) 350 L (mm) 450 H (mm) 500/nSoil Туре A Ag (g) 0.2
