Etiquette: Sets the mood of the event. Introduction Etiquette is the set of rules or customs that control accepted behavior in particular social groups or social situations (DINING ETIQUETTE Making Your Mark at Business Dining Experiences). Dinner etiquette is important as that projects respect for the host and the entire event. The essay, “Guest Etiquette” by Amy Sedaris gives advice to the guests on what to do before arriving at a dinner party and upon arrival. The essay will make an attempt to understand the etiquette reasoning out how they can be carried out and why they are important. Etiquettes are crucial as they begin before arriving at the event and continue till we leave a thank you note. Body Paragraphs There are many things that one has to consider prior to attending a party. Firstly, accepting the invitation has responsibilities in itself. As Amy Sedaris, the author says the reason for choosing the guest is to enjoy their company. So, when one receives an invitation, it is the respect to respond immediately. Even if one is declining the invitation it is better to inform when the host has invited you to the party. The author says that it is not necessary to explain why he/she has canceled the invitation. But I have a different opinion on this, if the host is maintaining a close relationship, it is better to explain the reason for dropping off the invitation. I disagree with abruptly dropping off the invitation. There are also possibilities that the host might take it personally if the invitation is dropped. So, it is better to say a word about the reason for not being able to attend. Upon arrival, one has to consider adopt to a few manners and behaviors. There are a few things that one has to consider upon arrival. If one is thinking of bringing an additional guest to the event, it is always preferable to intimate the host prior to the event. It might take as a surprise to the host if the guest brings more people into the event. As the host has to make arrangements to accommodate everyone in the room. Even if it will intimidate the guest, it is always better to inform earlier in time rather than saying it at the last minute. I agree with this point, as that helps the host to make food preparations and other arrangements accordingly. According to the author, bringing flowers might create uneasiness if that does not go well with the theme or the room décor. She also says that it might slow down the host because the host has to stop what she is doing to address the flowers. So the host says that it is better to present a flower after the party as a thank you gift. I agree with the author’s viewpoint but at the same time presenting a bouquet at the time of arrival is a way to greet the host and be thankful for the invitation. I would suggest that it is great to choose a bouquet and present it upon arrival as that also brings a smile and a way of saying thank you. Etiquette also involves the items the guest brings to the table. There are two ways one can bring food and they are; bringing a cake or anything as full cooked food and the other is an ingredient like butter for cooking purposes. It is not advisable to bring chicken and broccoli at the last minute as that might disappoint the guest and might make him/her supervise the kitchen rather than address the guest and hosting the party. One can bring confectioners’ sugar, light bulbs, or a roll of those paper towels. These items can be used immediately during the party and if the guest is willing to bring a classy water bottle it adds to the event and can also help the guest. Bringing raw items at the last minute is not advisable. I totally agree with this behavior, once when I was hosting a party one of my friends brought in items to make a quick dessert and it was helpful as it was quite easy to make. Had she brought complicated ingredients it would have made the situation difficult and it would have disrupted the party. Additionally, what the conversations are at the party matters as that set the mood for the event. The guests should stay away from saying anything negative like “My life is such a mess” and anything about the climate. Even if it is a story, it is better to keep it short. If the guest is going to tell a long story at the party it might divert the purpose of the party. And it also brings unwanted attention to the atmosphere. I totally agree with this point, in one of the instances, when I was hosting a party one of my guests began to talk about their engagement event and she took all the attention. One such example is making a love proposal at a friend’s engagement. Engagements are private and mean a lot to the couple, so others should not take the attention of the host as that is their day. To sum it up, guest etiquette is crucial as that determines the event and sets the mood at the party. The author, Amy Sedaris has given the best examples in “Guest Etiquette” by bringing out many instances from arriving to leaving the event. I agree with most of her suggestions as I see the importance of following up on the event. The guest and host make the event wholesome and successful and so coordination among them is vital for the event. And the essay has addressed all the crucial areas to be addressed.
