Biomedical Scientist and utilise the UKHSA approved Standard of Microbial

Identification algorithm for respiratory pathogens as well as background research

to decide a course of action for diagnosing a patient's respiratory infection.

Please read through the algorithm and questions below carefully. Although this

assignment is split into separate sections, each question should be approached as

a 'mini essay' ensuring that the answer is structured and contains citations where

appropriate.

For higher grades you are expected to partake in independent research and

consider options outside of the algorithm given such as different organisms and/or

different testing methodologies. Also, consider how the clinical details could relate

to disease outside of the respiratory system and what samples would help to rule

these out.
