Historic and Modern Korea: Object Analysis and Compare/Contrast

Response = 3 Paragraphs Total

Throughout the semester, you have thoroughly analyzed Asian art objects and will

continue to demonstrate these skills for the Unit III Exam. For Part I, you must choose

two works of art and analyze each according to the following instructions (You can

choose any work of art from the textbook/Chapter 11 PowerPoint, except for the

following images: Map on pg 244 and Figure 11-34).

Paragraph #1, Historic and Dynastic Korea:Choose one work of Korean art before

1950 and discuss how it reflects, demonstrates, or communicates what was happening

in Korea during its historic/dynastic timeframe (objects can be found in the textbook,

pages 242-266). This paragraph must be 5-7 complex sentences that demonstrate

college-level writing. Identify the artwork you are discussing (textbook figure #,

artist if known, title, date, medium).

Paragraph #2, Modern and Contemporary Korea: Choose one work of Korean art

after 1950and discuss how it reflects, demonstrates, or communicates what was

happening in Korea during its modern/contemporary timeframe (objects can be found in

the textbook, pages 267-275). This paragraph must be 5-7 complex sentences that

demonstrate college-level writing. Identify the artwork you are discussing (textbook

figure #, artist if known, title, date, medium).

Paragraph #3, Compare and Contrast: Directly compare and contrast the two chosen

works by discussing each particular time period (historic/dynastic Korea with

modern/contemporary Korea) and thinking about how Korean society has changed over

time. Do not simply describe each work on its own or merely repeat what was discussed

in the previous paragraphs; you are choosing each object for a reason, and they must/nbe linked in some manner when analyzing their similarities and differences. In addition

to context (cultural and societal changes), you can also compare/contrast the formal

qualities of each work (materials, media, artistic processes) if it emphasizes the main

points you are making. This paragraph must be 7-10 complex sentences that

demonstrate college-level writing. Include an image of each artwork after paragraph

3. The images can be taken directly from the Chapter PowerPoints or you can use

a digital image of the same artwork found online.

Criteria: Part I consists of three paragraphs total, each consisting of thoughtful,

complex sentences that directly addresses the required topics. You will be graded on

the quality of the response, which should demonstrate critical thinking skills as well as a

clear grammatical structure. You should be able to create a thoughtful analysis based

on your own opinions and observations. Be careful not to plagiarize from the

textbook or other sources (including Al technology), which will result in a failing

grade. If needed, be sure to use quotations and directly cite your source.
