HSC4M - Final Project! HSC4M1 Course Consolidation Project! Overview: Throughout this course, we have been looking at many topics connected to cultural anthropology. We have explored and learned about universal cultural norms, subcultures, cultural loss, the relationship between food and cultural identity, and made many personal and global connections. Hopefully you have a better understanding of the fascinatingly diverse world we inhabit. Yet for all of the ways in #KOBRA which we may view others and different cultural groups as being unique, we have also explored and resonated with the ways in which we are similar despite these differences. For your culminating activity, which is worth approx 30% of your final grade, you will be tasked with consolidating your learning throughout this course. You will be responsible for preparing a 650-700 word essay that addresses and answers the following question: Using the information you were exposed to throughout this class, to what extent do you (now) feel that human cultures are more alike than different? You will be supporting your stance by making reference to our course material, but I am also asking you to further supplement your ideas by incorporating content in relation to the issues you discuss (either through the viewing of a documentary or through the incorporation of three more references, whether articles, magazines, books etc.). So, APA formatting along with APA in-text citations and a reference page for ALL sources used MUST be listed to avoid plagiarism. The reference page MUST be in the format of an annotated bibliography. HSC4M - Final Project! Details: To start, consider some of the following “big topics" we have covered: - Universal cultural norms (i.e. concept of privacy) Cultural loss (i.e. extinction of certain languages) Cultural importance of food Controversial cultural practices (i.e. bullfighting, seal-hunting, etc) Cultural repatriation Etc (many others) In considering these, consider what they reveal in regards to whether human cultures are more similar or different and then use that to determine your overall argument: Ex. Human cultures are more alike than different OR Ex. Human cultures are more different than alike Next, you need to consider how you will support/defend your argument by discussing two of these "big topics” (see those listed above) and combine them with your overall stance: Ex. It is clear that human cultures are more alike than different when comparing universal cultural norms and cultural loss. OR Ex. It is clear that human cultures are more different than alike when comparing tangible expressions of culture and cultural repatriation. Additional Research: Find three articles/books/magazines etc that supplement the information explored in our class that you plan to incorporate into your project. For instance, if you plan to discuss cultural loss and want to explore all of the languages that are near extinction, you could find and incorporate information from an article that discusses this. HSC4M - Final Project! Steps: There will be several steps to this assignment: 1. Planning - choosing what stance you want to take in regards to the question: Using the information you were exposed to throughout this class, to what extent do you (now) feel that human cultures are more alike than different? 2.
