Question

Hydrogen is used industrially in Fischer-Tropsch reactions, such as the reactionshown below. \mathrm{CO}(\mathrm{g})+2 \mathrm{H}_{2}(\mathrm{~g}) \rightleftharpoons \mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{OH}(\mathrm{g}) \quad \Delta \mathrm{H}=-129 \mathrm{~kJ} \mathrm{~mol}-1 (i) State whether this reaction is exothermic or endothermic. Explain your answer. (ii) State whether you would expect the entropy change of this reaction to be positive, negative or negligible. Explain your answer. (iii) Suggest what sort of conditions should be employed to carry out this reaction efficiently. Explain your suggestions. Using the following information, calculate the equilibrium constant for the reaction in part (a). 2 moles of CO and 4 moles of H₂ were placed in a 2 dm³ reactor and allowed to come to equililbrium. The equilibrium mixture was found to contain 0.8 moles ofCH3OH.
