The probable instances of false teaching at Colossae came from a complicated religious setting full of various cults and superstitions (Hindson & Towns, 2013, p. 701). People lived in fear of spirits, devils, and ancestral powers, and the city itself became renowned for its many groups and gods. People used methods like self-mutilation and flagellation to keep evil forces away. In this setting, the gospel of grace got into the neighborhood houses of worship through Philemon and Nympha (Colossians 4:15). But even among these new Christian groups, new heresies started to spread. When Epaphras first told Paul about these problems in Rome, he pointed out several false beliefs. Paul's letter to the Colossians also contains clues that point to a rejection of Christ's sufficiency for salvation and an emphasis on human knowledge and rituals in place of a higher authority (Hindson & Towns, 2013, p. 701). The Christians' knowledge of Christ's supremacy and the sufficiency of His work on the cross were put to the test by this departure from the core beliefs of Christianity. Some believers insisted on strictly following Jewish customs regarding religion, such as keeping certain days holy and following specific dietary restrictions (Hindson & Towns, 2013, p. 701). Others were interested in intellectual ideas, and still others went into angel worship. The false teaching in Colossae used a common Greek belief that matter and physical life were evil and that God would not become human. The false teachers took well-known ideas and put a Christian spin on them. This led to a theory (Colossians 2:8) that didn't have the saving power of the gospel. Also, the false teachers may have pushed for worshiping celestial bodies or natural spirits and believing that they had the power to change people's fate, which goes against the belief in one true God revealed in Jesus Christ.
