INSTRUCTIONS In the essay, you should focus mostly on discussing and analyzing what the speakers say and/or what is written in the visual. In other words, make sure that quote words from the visual. Here is the main question you should address in your thesis statement and throughout the essay: How does the creator of the visual you have chosen use ethos, logos, and pathos to accomplish its purpose? Audience: Your intended audience/reader is an academic audience that has seen the visual that you have chosen and knows the definitions of ethos, logos, and pathos. That means that you should NOT give a long summary of the visual, and do NOT define ethos, logos, and pathos. Purpose: Your purpose is to write an essay analyzing how ethos, logos, and pathos are used to accomplish the purpose of the visual. Length: Your essay should be between 800 – 1,000 words and include 5 paragraphs (i.e., an introduction with the thesis statement as the last sentence, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion). Sources: Do NOT use any sources other than the visual, Laura Bolin Carroll's "Backpacks vs. Briefcases," and Rebecca Jones' "Finding the Good Argument OR Why Bother Bother With Logic?" Limit the use of "Backpacks vs. Briefcases" and "Finding the Good Argument" to no more than 1 quote per paragraph and no quotes of 3 lines or more, and make sure that you cite the sources both within the essay and at the end of the essay on the works cited page. We will discuss how to create a works cited page later. Grading/Rubric: This essay is worth 100 points.
