Three years ago, John let a room in his house to Peter, a nurse, for a monthly rent of £600. After a year had passed, Peter found himself unable to pay the rent because of an increase in his transport costs to work. John offered to let Peter stay at a rent of £400 a month until Peter received a pay rise. Also, two years ago, Peter started cooking dinner for John every night as John's eyesight was weak, and he was afraid to use the oven. Peter did not do very well as a nurse. He never had a pay rise and was still paying John £400 a month after two years. However, last month a distant relative of Peter died and left him £3,000,000 in his will. Peter told John that he was intending to leave. John was angry as he still had eyesight problems and he liked the meals that Peter cooked. John now says that he wants all the rent that Peter has not paid. Advise Peter as to any defences he might have to John's claim.
