LATI307 - Essay 1 - Primary sources from the Cold War era.

The assignment is to write a 1500-word essay that summarises and contextualises 2-3 archival

documents relevant to the Cold War and Latin America. Your essay should include a short

introduction that identifies the common theme in the documents you selected: e.g. an event,

policy, time period, topic, individual, organisation (see list below). This is followed by a

summary of each document. In the conclusion you explain what the documents tell us about

the overall theme you identified in the introduction.

During the lectures and seminars you will be introduced to online archival databases and search

strategies. The Digital National Security Archive will be our starting point but you can find

other online databases on the reading list, including non-written sources (e.g. mural paintings,

interviews). To further prepare you for this assessment, we will analyse an archival document

in class and the seminar in Week 5 takes a workshop format to work on your summaries.

* If you are studying Spanish (and Portuguese) we encourage you to include at least one

document in one of these languages (this is not compulsory).
