Question
MEE1027 ENGINEERING DESIGN 1 ASSIGNMENT DETERMINATION AND CALCULATION OF TOLERANCES FOR ENGINEERING DRAWINGS Assignment Instructions In this assignment, you will use a range of relevant standards to calculate and determine the tolerances which will be applied to the parts in "Gear Sub-assembly" (shown in Figure 1). The "Gear Sub-assembly" includes three parts: "Bush", "Shaft" and "Housing". This assignment contains 6 questions. The general information is given as follows: • Submission deadline: Before 23:55 on 19th April 2024 (Friday, Week 25) (Standard penalties will apply for late submissions); This assignment carries 40% of total mark in this module; All files (Excel file and SolidWorks drawing file: SLDDRW) should be submitted using the Assignment Tool on Canvas. See below for the submission requirements: Questions 1, 2 & 6: Questions 3, 4 & 5: Enter the answers into the "Assignment Answers.xlsx" file on Canvas; Use SolidWorks to complete the incomplete drawing layouts for “Bush” & "Shaft", and to create a new drawing layout for “Housing”. * PLEASE DO NOT EDIT THE PART FILE Figures 2 and 3 show the incomplete drawing layouts of "Bush" and "Shaft". The drawing layout of "Housing" is not provided. For Questions 3, 4 & 5, use the appropriate "Drawing A3L” drawing sheet template and complete the title block for each drawing with the following information: Drawing No: Project: Description: Question Number (Bush, Shaft & Housing are 003, 004 & 005 respectively) MEE1027 Part Name (Bush, Shaft or Housing) Name and Date: As Appropriate Standards are required for some questions. See below for the required standards (download the standards from the QUB library webpage): Question 2: Question 4: BS 4500A:1970 BS 4235-1:1972 (Table 1 and 3); Question 6: BS 3692:2014 (Table 5); BS 4320:1968. The information in this document should be used alongside the data provided on Canvas to complete the assignment; ALL WORK SUBMITTED MUST BE YOUR OWN. PLEASE COMPLETE ALL WORK ON YOUR OWN. DO NOT SHARE DRAWING FILES OR PART MODELS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Calculate the tolerance on the Stud Length (Z) of "Shaft" (the required high and low limits on the Axial Clearance (AC) in Gear Sub-assembly will be provided by Canvas). i. Specify the high and low limits on the two Flanges (X) and Housing Width (Y); ii. Calculate the high and low limits on the Stud Length (Z). Assumptions: i. Tolerance on Axial Clearance (AC) distributes equally across each part; ii. Unilateral tolerance applies to X and bilateral tolerance applies to Y; iii. "High limit on X" equates to "tolerance on X"; iv. "High and low limits on Y" are the same (equate to half of "tolerance on Y"). 2. Use BS 4500A:1970 to determine the dimensional tolerance on the critical diameters in Gear Sub- assembly. The following tolerance should be determined (the limits and fits at each interface will be provided by Canvas): i. Bush & Shaft: Critical Diameter is 35 mm; ii. Housing & Bush: Critical Diameter is 45 mm; iii. Gear & Shaft: Critical Diameter is 20 mm (for the Right Gear). 3. Use SolidWorks to complete the incomplete drawing layout for "Bush” (shown in Figure 2). The drawing requirements are given as follows: İ. Use third angle projection and scale 2:1; ii. Ensure your drawing layouts includes ALL dimensions and the dimensional tolerance calculated in this assignment; iii. Include all appropriate markings, labeling and notation. 4. Use SolidWorks to complete the incomplete drawing layout for "Shaft" (shown in Figure 3). The drawing requirements are given as follows: i. Use third angle projection and scale 1:1; ii. Include ONLY the dimensions (for which the tolerance are calculated or determined) in this assignment, and their dimensional tolerance; iii. Include all appropriate markings, labeling and notation; iv. Dimension and tolerance the Keyways (normal fit) using Table 1 and 3 of BS 4235-1:1972. Dr Chi-Wai Chan Page 4 5. Use SolidWorks to create the drawing layouts for "Housing". The drawing requirements are given as follows: i. Include a section view of Housing, and it should be orientated as shown in Figure 1; ii. Use third angle projection and scale 1:1; iii. Include ONLY the dimensions (for which the tolerance are calculated or determined) in this assignment, and their dimensional tolerance; iv. Include all appropriate markings, labeling and notation. 6. Use BS 3692:2014 and BS 4320:1968 to determine the required engineering information of mechanical fastener parts (the size of bolt will be provided by Canvas): i. Use BS 3692:2014 to determine the max. and min. limits on the "width across corners" of the Hexagon Bolt, and the tolerance on "thickness of thin nut”; ii. Use BS 4320:1968 to determine the "min. outside diameter" of Bright Washers. Dr Chi-Wai Chan Page 5
