Question

Members of Congress have many considerations when deciding what actions to take, what bills to advocate for, and how to vote in committee and on the floor. One broader philosophical question that all elected representatives, whether in Congress or on the local school board, have to consider, is their representation style. Your textbookLinks to an external site. mentions two ends of a spectrum: delegates and trustees. Begin by reviewing that section of the chapter. You can also find more information on the roots of this dichotomy at the Stanford Encyclopedia of PhilosophyLinks to an external site.. Once you have reviewed what both concepts refer to, you should write a discussion post of approximately 300 - 500 words, answering the following questions: 1) In your own words, what do the concepts of "delegate" and "trustee" mean to you? Give an example of a member of Congress acting as a delegate and an example of them acting as a trustee. This example can be fictional or can come from current events. 2) Which model would you prefer members of Congress adopt? Would you prefer they act more as delegates or as trustees when representing their constituents? Why? Please post your response below rather than uploading it as a word document/PDF, since that's harder for your classmates to read. If you use any sources other than the ones linked above, please make sure to cite them following the guidelines outlined here. Once you have made your original post, make sure you reply to two of your classmates posts using the "3C's and a Q" format outlined in this post found in the Getting Started Module.
