Department of Defense Support to Domestic Incidents At what point would the military be involved in a terrorist attack? Give example. Use citations to back up your statements. DHS Website: Locate the Five Homeland Security Missions. Which mission(s) would DOD be involved? Give examples. Assignment Expectations Length: This Case Assignment should be 3-5 pages, not counting the title page and references. References: At least two references should be included from academic sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journal articles). Required readings are included. Quoted material should not exceed 10% of the total paper (since the focus of these assignments is critical thinking). Use your own words and build on the ideas of others. When material is copied verbatim from external sources, it MUST be enclosed in quotes. The references should be cited within the text and listed at the end of the assignment in the References section (preferably in APA format). Organization: Subheadings should be used to organize your paper according to question. Grammar and Spelling: While no points are deducted for minor errors, assignments are expected to adhere to standard guidelines of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence syntax. Points may be deducted if grammar and spelling impact clarity. Just an FYI for the course - this is how I read and grade papers. 1. I open the file and go directly to the bibliography in the reference section. Going there first shows me the research foundation upon which you have built your paper. A solid research foundation will have a combination of data types. • • • Government sources (these are used to explain programs and define the scope and the intent of policy) Professional sources like on line web pages. These provide access to subject matter expertise who write based on perspective and experience. They are also business/profit driven which means they can promote a specific point of view. Peer reviewed data - these are research documents that have large bibliographies that show you where the author(s) have found data upon which they have built their hypothesis. EVERY PAPER IN THIS CLASS REQUIRES AT LEAST TWO PEER REVIEWED SOURCES, BOTH THE CASE AND SLP. 2. Next I read the paper to see if you have addressed each of the questions posed in the written assignment ⚫ This should be the most simple point of analysis. If there are three questions, there should be three sections in your paper, one for each question. 3. Lastly, I assess for critical thinking - this is where you as a student get to display how you think! • The academic articles that are peer reviewed are often the foundation of this assessment. Critical thinking doesn't mean being critical of things, but rather being curious. Do you accept things as they are or question if something is missing, or the wrong measurement is being employed? Do you wonder if it's too good to be true? You can display critical thinking in just a few sentences, so I look for it somewhere in your paper.
