Movie Critique Assignment Below is a list of movies representing various mental health disorders. You will select one movie to watch and critique. (Hint-You may need to watch the movie more than once to adequately answer the questions.) When watching the movie, please take note of the main characters in the movie and any mental health concerns these characters exhibit. Feel free to use your text to clarify symptomatology, treatments, legal issues, etc. when responding to the questions. After watching the movie, you will complete the assignment critiquing how the movie represented the mental health condition. Your clinical faculty will inform you of the due date for submission of this assignment. Be prepared to discuss the movie you viewed with your clinical group members during post-conference of week three (3) or four (4). 1. As Good as It Gets (1997) In❞ As Good as It Gets", Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson) is a novelist living with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Melvin finds a friend in a waitress (Helen Hunt) who works at the diner where he eats lunch every day, but the film shows how ostracizing it can be for someone living with OCD and the difficulties that they might have connecting with people who may not understand the condition. 2. A Beautiful Mind (2001) This movie, based on a true story, highlights the life of John Forbes Nash, Jr. (Russell Crow), a mathematical savant who lived with schizophrenia. The movie beautifully captures the challenges John faced throughout his life, including paranoia, hallucinations, and delusions that altered his promising career and deeply affected his personal life. 3. Benny & Joon (1993) Benny (Johnny Depp) who cares for his sister, Joon (Mary Stuart Matherson) who is battling schizophrenia. Benny welcomes Sam (Johnny Depp) into his home at Joon's request. Sam and Joon start a relationship. 4. Call Me Crazy (2013) "Call Me Crazy" follows five individuals as they all deal with various conditions of mental illness. The five short films that make up the entirety of the movie explore the impact and stigma of mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. Comment: Focus on one story for the review. 5. Girl, Interrupted (1999) "Girl, interrupted", a true story, is set in the 1960s and follows Susanna Kaysen (Winona Ryder), a woman diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) during her stay in a psychiatric hospital following her suicide attempt. During her stay, Kaysen befriends other women struggling with mental health issues, most notably Lisa Rowe (Angelina Jolie). 6. Infinitely Polar Bear (2015) Cam (Mark Ruffalo), a father with bipolar disorder, becomes the sole caregiver for his two daughters while his wife (Zoe Saldana) goes away to graduate school. Throughout the movie, Cam faces many challenges that make it difficult for him to take care of his daughters. However, despite the severity of his condition (and some unique parenting methods that accompany it), Cam learns that he is a good father who cares deeply for his family. Infinitely Polar Bear is a very meaningful portrayal of how families can be impacted by mental illness. 7. Jacob's Ladder (1990) In Jacob's Ladder, a Vietnam War veteran (Tim Robbins) attempts to discover the truth about what happened to him as he suffers from hallucinations. The movie is quite dark, but that's what makes it a must watch. It doesn't shy away from the realities of post-traumatic stress disorder. 8. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)-available in HCC library Randle P. McMurphy (Nicholson), a free-spirited con fakes insanity and moves in with what he calls the "nuts." Immediately, his contagious sense of disorder runs up against numbing routine and Nurse Ratched. 9. Rain Man (1998) "Rain Man" follows a car dealer (Tom Cruise) who discovers he has an autistic older brother (Dustin Hoffman) after his father's death and also has inherited all of the family's estate. Although autism is a spectrum condition and not a mental illness, the film is vital for raising awareness. Comment: Focus on the capacity for forming relationships for Raymond. 10. The Soloist (2009) While recovering from a recent biking accident, Steve Lopez (Robert Downey, Jr.), a journalist, spots a homeless man Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx) playing a violin. Lopez initially thinks of the man, named Nathaniel Ayers, as just a story idea. But as he begins to unravel the mystery of Ayers' life, Lopez finds a change is happening within himself. 11. Still Alice (2014) Still Alice shows the heartbreaking effect of Alzheimer's Disease on a family. Dr. Alice Howland (Julianne Moore) is a linguistics professor at Columbia University who must come face-to-face with a devastating diagnosis: early- onset Alzheimer's. Although the disease is not counted as a mental illness, the film shows the devastating effects it can have on a person's mind and self-worth. 12. Forget Me Never (1999) Diane (Mia Farrow) works at a law firm when she finds herself experiencing short-term memory loss that leads to early onset Alzheimer's disease. The story depicts the impact of this neurodegenerative disease on the patient, family members, and friends. 13. Clean and Sober (1998). Daryl (Michael Keaton) is a real estate salesman with a cocaine habit. He embezzles money from the company he works for. When he wakes up next to a woman who overdosed, he seeks ways to hide from the police. Depicts addiction to drugs/alcohol and recovery. 14. A Star is Born (2018) Passionate tale of two artistic souls (Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper) coming together in a complex journey. This movie depicts alcoholism and addiction and enabling behaviors between these two souls. 15. 28 Days (2000) Gwen Cummings (Sandra Bullock), a journalist with a reputation of being the life of the party, is court ordered to one month of treatment in a substance abuse rehabilitation center. 16. When a Man Loves a Woman (1994) The relationship between a married couple (Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan) is strained when the wife's drinking is out of control. 17. Silver Linings Playbook (2012) Pat (Bradley Cooper) finds himself living with his parents after losing his wife and job. After discharge from a mental institution, he is determined to return to a life with his wife. Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) who offers him a deal. 18. Joker (2019) Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is seeking a connection all the while being bullied, feeling isolated, and unimportant. Title of Movie: Setting and Summary: 1.
