Although I do not always agree with him, this is by far the best textbook I have read here at LAPU because Entwistle knows his stuff. He does a great job covering many ideas in religion, psychology, and philosophy. (Although, I just finished chapter 11 and it gave me a head ache). Which model best aligns with your views regarding worldview and psychology? In chapter eight, Entwistle (2021) discusses "six models: Enemies, Spies, Colonialists, Rebuilders, Neutral Parties, and Allies" (p. 101). I was delighted to discover that I am mostly in harmony with the "Domestic Spies" model. The lyrics to a U2 song called When Love Comes to Town seem pertinent. "I was a sailor, I was lost at sea I was under the waves before love rescued me" (U2, 1989). This would have to come from the client for this to be effective. A Strength One of the greatest tools of mental health is gratitude. Entwistle (2021) states, "How can belief in God's love be harnessed to help people feel good about themselves, to bring about positive thinking and self-esteem?" (p. 104). I believe someone who is depressed and isolated can benefit from knowing that God loves them. Being loved by God can provide a direction and a way to escape mental confusion and isolation. For therapy to work, it is essential to be able to separate one's thinking while simultaneously not stigmatizing a client's spiritual belief system. Entwistle makes a point throughout his book: A Christian can benefit from modern psychology. Entwistle (2021) "Domestic Spies: the specific content of one's own religion may be seen as largely mythic, useful for illustrating things about human nature and human needs" (p. 104). I believe there is much wisdom in the Bible applicable to human nature. I have to wonder if there could be a possible discussion separating Jesus as a spiritual psychologist and or the son of God. Can one isolate clear ideas regardless of the source? Entwistle (2021) states, "How can I affirm the truth of my religious system without taking its teachings (especially about supernatural or miraculous claims) literally?" (104). This could be the beginning of someone not thinking dogmatically c seeing the world in black-and-white binary choices. The dark and gray areas of the client must be investigated to ensure growth, but this process does not mean one must forsake God or Jesus.
