NAME OF THE MOVIE:

Manhunter and Red Dragon.

TASK INSTRUCTIONS:

Please answer each of the following questions in a paragraph of about 200

words (more or less). The finished film response should be 600-800 words

in total (no penalty for going over or slightly under). For each

question, please use specific, concrete examples from the films. Feel

free to use any of the supplementary materials provided in Canvas to

support your responses. Anything you use from outside those I have

provided must be properly documented and acknowledged.

1) Both Manhunter and Red Dragon are based on the Thomas Harris novel Red

Dragon, but they often feel like very different stories. To what do you

owe the explanation for these differences? Consider things like (but not

limited to) casting, cinematography, scores/soundtracks, special effects,

narrative, or pacing. Choose at least two (2) differences in the films to

compare and contrast; choose particular scenes that you can parallel.

2) Manhunter is a prequel to the "Hannibal Lecter universe" in both story

arc and film release, but Red Dragon came out after the success of Silence

of the Lambs (and the somewhat lesser success of Hannibal the film). What

does it mean to view a "prequel" after the sequel? Can you think of other

films/franchises where this sequence has been

interrupted/upended/otherwise complicated? Give an example and/or be

specific in your discussion.

3) Now that you've seen both films, how do you feel about the split

casting? Who played will better? Hannibal? Francis? Reba? Jack? Were

all the best performances in one film, or would you mix and match? What

makes the portrayal(s) you prefer memorable or enjoyable? Contrariwise,

what DON'T you like about the acting in the roles you don't prefer? Give

at least two (2) specific examples from one or more of the characters we

see in both films (Will, Hannibal, Francis, Jack, Reba, Molly, Freddy, et

cetera).
